Fiona, along with MPs and Peers from across Parliament have written to the Prime Minister, requesting asylum be offered to Asia Bibi. The letter was as follows:
"Dear Prime Minster,
We draw to your attention to a letter (attached), addressed to Prime Minister Khan of Pakistan, and signed by over 50 members of both houses of parliament, representing all major parties. The letter calls for the granting of safe passage for Aasiya Noreen (Asia Bibi) and her family out of Pakistan. Over 175 international parliamentarians have also signed the letter, which is attached. More signatories are being added every hour, from all over the world.
The government of Pakistan has effectively overturned a Supreme Court decision in order to satisfy Islamist political factions. The political deal struck with the Tehreek-e-Labbaik not only emboldens extremists who wish to harm Asia and her family but also represents a blow to the rule of law in a country that receives c.£380,000 every day from the British taxpayer.
We recognise that public, political interference in the affairs of Pakistan by UK officials might be inadvisable. However, we believe the United Kingdom has a moral duty, practically and symbolically to act in any appropriate way it can.
We urgently request a meeting with you regarding the Asia Bibi case and the possibility of the United Kingdom making an offer of asylum to her and her family. This letter follows a prior discussion about the matter between Fiona Bruce MP and Jeremy Hunt, Foreign Secretary.
Yours sincerely,
Lord Alton of Liverpool
Baroness D’Souza
Fiona Bruce MP
Jim Shannon MP
Marie Rimmer MP
Tim Farron MP"
