The Home Secretary Sajid Javid MP said:
"I have now come to the conclusion that this is the right time to review the scheduling of cannabis. Before I go into the detail of the review, let me be absolutely clear that this step is in no way the first step in the legislation of cannabis for recreational use. This Government has absolutely no plans to legalise cannabis and the penalties for unauthorised supply and possession will remain unchanged."

"I welcome the Home Secretary's statement as I strongly oppose the legalisation of cannabis, a drug which causes addiction, mental health problems and can be a gateway drug to even more devastatingly damaging substances. We need to protect young lives against this - not condone cannabis use by legalisation."
