"I am unable to be with you in person today but I wanted to send a message of solidarity to the people of Hong Kong at this time. I have had the privilege of meeting both Joshua Wong and Nathan Law, and have heard about Alex Chow and his courageous work. I was shocked and deeply saddened when they were imprisoned, especially as they had already served the community service imposed on them by a court a year ago. These are fine, bright, brave and principled young people whose only desire is to protect Hong Kong's freedoms and serve Hong Kong people. They deserve our support and respect. The Umbrella Movement was one of the most peaceful mass protests anywhere in the world in recent times. The United Kingdom has responsibilities to Hong Kong, and I will do what I can in Parliament to ensure we live up to them. Please be assured of my support, and be assured that Hong Kong is not and will not be forgotten. Those of us concerned for the people of Hong Kong will continue to urge China to respect One Country Two Systems, especially the rule of law and basic human rights in Hong Kong, and we will support the people of Hong Kong in their legitimate desire for universal suffrage. The Umbrella Movement awoke the conscience of many and impressed the world. It is our duty to build on that legacy and ensure that Hong Kong's way of life is protected".
