Fiona attended Open Doors' exhibition in Parliament highlighting the flight of Yezidi women who have been terribly persecuted for their faith and ethnicity in Iraq.
In August 2014 ISIS took control of Sinjar in Northern Iraq and abducted and enslaved over 6,000 Yezidi women and children. There are still over 3,000 Yezidis in captivity or unaccounted for. The exhibition displayed art work from British artist Hannah Rose Thomas who travelled to Kurdistan, Northern Iraq along with clinical psychologist Dr Sarah Whittaker-Howe for an art project with Yezedi women who had escaped ISIS - the aim of the project was to use art as a tool for advocacy.
In April 2016, Fiona initiated a debate on a motion on recognising the actions of ISIS against Christians and Yezidis as genocide, the subsequent vote was supported by the House 278-0. The motion was:
"That this House believes that Christians, Yazidis, and other ethnic and religious minorities in Iraq and Syria are suffering genocide at the hands of Daesh; and calls on the Government to make an immediate referral to the UN Security Council with a view to conferring jurisdiction upon the International Criminal Court so that perpetrators can be brought to justice."
Zoe Smith, Head of Advocacy at Open Doors, said:
"We thank Fiona for her continuing passion for such concerns."
