North Korean Escapees standing in Local Elections

This is a very moving article about a brave lady I’ve had the privilege to meet several times as Co Chair of the North Korea All Party Group https://www.conservativehome.com/thetorydiary/2021/04/the-first-north-koreans-to-stand-as-conservative-candidates-help-vindicate-our-democracy.html

The other North Korean escapee candidate in this week’s local elections is Timothy Cho, whose story of his persecution is similarly heartrending (and who worked in my office in Westminster for a year not long ago)

Timothy Cho (Conservative)

"I was born in North Korea and spent many years homeless and begging for food after my parents escaped the brutal regime. I managed to escape twice, and was imprisoned and tortured on my journey to freedom. These experiences have made me appreciate living in a democratic society.

I want to give back to the country that has welcomed me and embraced me – that is why I am determined to be [a] local councillor. I want to help those who are less fortunate – those who don’t have everything and who need support."
