Fiona will be presenting the Genocide Determination Bill on 5th September. Fiona said:
"Referral to the International Criminal Court to bring perpetrators to justice for the unspeakable torture and killings by Daesh of Christians, Yazidis and other ethnic and religious minorities in Syria and Iraq should be happening now. The House of Commons called for the Government to refer these atrocities to the UN over a year ago by an overwhelming majority vote of 278 to nil. (House of Commons 20th April 2016 https://hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2016-04-20/debates/16042036000001/DaeshGenocideOfMinorities#contribution-527CC83E-0027-46B5-B86E-A501AFE05D56)
Recognition by the ICC of this appalling genocide of our generation would be a crucial step in helping to prevent further such atrocities, punish those responsible, and protect those suffering as a result. It is essential this action is taken without further delay whilst as much evidence as possible can still be gathered, presented to, and considered by the ICC. We as a country should be leading the way in pressing the international community to take action in this way and I hope that my Genocide Determination Bill will help to achieve this. I will be presenting this Bill at the earliest possible opportunity in this Parliament, on 5th September, the first sitting day Parliament returns after the summer recess. This Bill is in similar terms Lord Alton’s Genocide Determination Bill which he presented in the House of Lords on 13th July which demonstrates the deep level of concern on this issue across both Houses of Parliament."
