Thank you to those constituents who have contacted me expressing concerns about proposed new restrictions in light of the new Omicron variant.

The safety of my constituents is uppermost in my mind.

I will therefore be supporting these measures when put to the House of Commons today, as I think it is important we take early action to tackle the new variant and save as many lives as possible.

As the Government have said,  we know from experience that the exponential growth that we are seeing at the moment could lead to a large rise in hospitalisations, and therefore sadly in deaths. There is a lot still to be learnt about the new variant and so I do think it is right to be cautious as scientists discover more about how transmissible and how serious, in terms of causing severe disease, Omicron may be.
